Mae Haad is one of the best snorkeling beaches on Koh Phangan. It has great snorkeling just off the beach and also around Koh Ma which is a close by island that is joined to the main island by a thin sandy bar which can be walked across at low tide.
It’s extremely laid back at Mae Haad beach and you’ll notice that a lot of scuba divers learn the ropes here during the day as there is plenty of coral not far from the shoreline. Lunch is taken whilst swinging softly in creaking net hammocks while the sun is fully soaked up.
Situated on the north-west coast, Mae Haad beach is a 25 minute or so songthaew journey from Thong Sala. The roads leading here are good up until you turn off the main road and go down the track that leads to the beach – although it’s not too bad it can be tricky on a motorbike so take care if that’s your chosen method of transport. It’s a mixed bunch of people who like to stay at Mae Haad on Koh Phangan but in particular there are many Scandinavians who seem to be drawn to this beach more than any other on the island.
Can’t blame them.. it’s a beautiful, chilled out place on this tropical paradise!
